The FORF fulfills its mission of helping to promote education in Haiti by distributing reading materials to children and adults. To facilitate that process, the FORF makes it possible for donors to offer these materials in a packaged format for use in schools and adult education centers. Donors wishing to offer these reading materials can place their orders directly by either
making an online payment here, or by contacting
info@forfhaiti.org.
Order these reading materials and the FORF will arrange for their delivery to a needy school or training center in Haiti. In return, the FORF will provide you with a receipt as well as a thank you letter from the school or center that was the recipient of your generous gift.
The following packaged formats can be offered to deprived schools and adult centers selected by FORF:
- Mini-Libraries - Mini-libraries consist of portable wooden bookcases divided into slots. When open, they present a variety of colorful books to children. The purpose of these mini-libraries is to develop in children a taste for reading, and encourage them to develop their literacy skills. Very few schools throughout Haiti have access to libraries. These mini-libraries provide an appropriate low-cost mechanism for putting children in touch with reading material other than their formally assigned textbooks.
- Reading Material for Adults - There can be no literacy program without post-literacy reading. The adult who has learned to read will quickly forget how to read without the continued stimulation of new reading materials. The FORF provides adults with a variety of reading materials written in creole by Odette Roy Fombrun, and that are designed to stimulate reading and thinking about the Haitian Constitution, the history of Haiti, and the duties of Haitian citizens.
- Training Posters for Civic Education - These posters are large format reading materials written by Mrs. Fombrun and that are designed to be hung on walls in prominent locations in or around a home, a school, or an educational centre. They teach readers about substantive issues involving the History of Haiti, the election process, or the origins of the Haitian flag. With a minimum order of 1000 posters, the donor's name and/or corporate logo can be printed directly onto the poster, bottom center.
The FORF strategy to respond to the enormous damages caused by the earthquake has been to identify and select a group of needy schools in the heavily damaged area of Petionville and to focus on helping them get back on their feet. This entails:
- Short-term: Assist in providing immediate assistance to children & teachers in the selected schools --access to food, water, clothes, blankets, shelter. Help get them necessary emergency assistance.
- Medium-term: Identify open spaces that can be used to put together makeshift classrooms. Obtain/make/organize large tents or temporary 'tonelles' that can be used to gather the children into classroom settings; provide them with rudimentary teaching materials, boards, chalk, paper, pencils, crayons.
- Long-term: Join other groups as needed to help rebuild these schools and contribute to their return to normalcy
Beyond the immediate crisis, the FORF's other main initiative involves creating 'model' projects in each of Haiti's 5 main regions that are designed to retain and motivate local people in their own communities, and attract diaspora-based cultural tourism. This 'touris lakay' will stimulate decentralization away from Haiti's main cities by increasing local employment opportunities, and thereby promote Haiti's economic development.

We welcome financial contributions from all those interested in supporting the FORF's basic philosophy and projects. 100% of all funds received by FORF go directly to fulfilling the mission and objectives set out by our Founder, Odette Roy Fombrun. None of the donated funds we receive are spent on administrative matters.
All donors automatically become members of FORF and will receive periodic updates on FORF's ongoing projects and activities.
Another important way in which you could help Haiti is to donate books to needy schools. Bulk orders of books go directly to children in schools identified by FORF. For more information on how you can help FORF books, mini-libraries, and educational posters to schools, contact us at info@forfhaiti.org.
